When I started studying security, I expected to feel like a beginner. Instead, I kept having the same realization: I already know this — just from the other side. Years of building web apps had quietly trained me for a lot of offensive and defensive security work. If you're a developer wondering whether you could make the jump, here are five skills you almost certainly already have.
1. Understanding HTTP deeply
As a developer you live in requests and responses — methods, status codes, headers, cookies, CORS, caching. In security, that same knowledge is the foundation of nearly every web attack and defense. Session fixation, CSRF, header injection, insecure cookies — none of it is mysterious if you've spent years watching the network tab. You already speak the protocol; you just start reading it adversarially.
2. Reading code is reading exploits
Most developers underrate how rare it is to read code fluently. In security, reviewing a proof-of-concept exploit, an obfuscated payload, or a vulnerable function is just... reading code. You can look at a snippet and trace data flow, spot where input isn't validated, and reason about what a function does under unexpected input. That's threat modeling with a different label.
3. API knowledge becomes API security
If you've designed REST or GraphQL APIs, you know where the soft spots are because you've made those mistakes: missing authorization checks on an endpoint, trusting a client-supplied ID, leaking data in an error message, rate limits that don't exist. API security is one of the fastest-growing areas in the field, and developers walk in already understanding the architecture they're testing.
4. Database experience demystifies injection
SQL injection sounds scary until you've written a few hundred queries yourself. Once you've built schemas, joined tables, and debugged an ORM, you understand exactly why concatenating user input into a query is dangerous and what an attacker gains from it. The same goes for NoSQL injection — if you've used MongoDB, you can picture the malicious query object immediately.
5. DevOps basics map to infrastructure security
Even modest DevOps experience — Docker, CI/CD, environment variables, a cloud console — translates directly. You understand attack surface because you've configured it: open ports, exposed secrets, over-permissive IAM roles, default credentials left in place. Hardening infrastructure is mostly knowing how it's wired, and you wired it.
